Panchkula: Outsourcing of sanitation work on agenda

After outsourcing the sanitation work of ward no 9 to a private company, the Panchkula Municipal Corporation has proposed to extend the system to ward no 1, 2, 4 and 20. The proposal would be discussed in the meeting on Tuesday. The meeting will be held after five months. The proposal was mooted in the wake of the shortage of sanitation workers in the corporation. The civic body, which covers Panchkula in 20 wards, is reeling under a shortage of 150 sanitation workers.

“There are not enough sanitation workers. Therefore, it was proposed to outsource the sanitation work of four more wards to an agency. The sanitation workers from these wards can then be put on duty in other wards,” said municipal commissioner Lalit Siwach.

The sanitation work of ward no 9 consisting of sectors 1,5,6,7,8 and 18 was outsourced to a private company in February this year.

However, the four wards proposed this time largely consist of villages. Ward no 1 and 2 are in Kalka, ward no 4 in Pinjore and ward no 20 includes villages in Barwala.

Among other issues, the civic body will also discuss modalities for construction of toilets to make the urban area of Panchkula open defecation free. While the rural Panchkula was the first to be declared ODF in Haryana, the target is yet to be achieved for the urban areas.

The corporation will also deliberate upon the proposal to shift the office to Agro Mall in Sector 20, owing to the inadequate space in the Sector 14 building.

The civic body currently functions from a rented building in Sector 14 and the project for construction of a new building in Sector 3 has been hanging in fire since the past two years.

It was proposed that it can shift to Agro Mall in Sector 20.

The proposal for installation of CCTV cameras in Kalka and Pinjore are among other issues that will be discussed.
